THINGS TO EXPECT IN 2014 FIFA WORLDCUP QUARTER FINALS; A REPEAT OF THE 1950 MARACANAZO

The Maracanazo which has commonly come into headlines in this year’s world cup tournament is a Portuguese word for what is possibly the biggest upset in world football. In the first ever world cup tournament which was held at Brazil, it was highly anticipated that the hosts(brazil) were the sure winners of the tournament but the unexpected occurred where in their final game the hosts lost to Uruguay who were considered underdogs.

A replica of the famous Maracanazo is bound to happen at the upcoming quarter final matches. In recently played matches we have witnessed some of the greatest football countries have unexpectedly exited the competition succumbing to humiliating losses against teams which to a large extent are new comers to the stated competition, a good example of the huge upsets would be the reigning champions Spain who exited the competition in probably what will be considered their worst ever performance having conceded around seven goals in their first five matches. They rarely went past the group levels.

A country like Colombia which has not reached the quarter finals probably since the period they first begun competing at world tournaments shows promise. It beat Uruguay 2-0 and the performance was simply amazing. A strong team such as brazil who are the host of the FIFA 2014 World cup have had a 11 year unbeaten record at home but the winds seem to be blowing strong and it would take a miracle for Brazil to come out as the ultimate winners. So far the teams that have moved on to quarter finals are Brazil and Colombia, France and Germany and Netherlands and Mexico. Today’s game will determine who will move on between Argentina and Switzerland with the winner playing against the winner of the game between Belgium and USA.

The quarter finals are going to be very competitive and there is no denying that we will have an upset. It is a battle for the strong hearted such as Netherlands. In their last game against Mexico, the comeback was phenomenon. It is the team that deserves the win, seconded by France and Germany. From the initial matches Netherlands was quick to put a superb performance that saw Spain defeated early.

The Maracanazo upset would be ultimately Colombia beating Brazil or a team such as Netherlands going home at the quartet finals. The game that leaves me in tears is Germany and France. At the end of the day, one of the two goes home after working so hard to reach this level. That’s the rose and thorn of the World Cup, seeing my top teams go home early. We can only hope that all teams are prepared to perform their best to avoid a Maracanazo upset.

In conclusion, the FIFA World Cup, 2014 has proven to be a major tournament where anything is possible. Emerging from the shadows are individuals and teams determined to give us a Maracanazo upset and on the other side of the coin an awesome performance.
